Traffic loads on road bridges: the Load Model 3 (LM3) in Eurocodes

Some road bridges must be designed against special traffic loads. This is the case of bridges that may experience a military use during their lifetime. The very conventional model used represents special vehicles that can exceptionally transit on bridges as abnormal vehicles. The application can concern one or several special vehicles. This case is detailed in the Annex A of EN 1991-2 which defines standardized models of special vehicles whose total weight ranges from 600 to 2400 kN.

The characteristic loads associated with the special vehicles should be taken as nominal values and should be considered as associated solely with transient design situations.

Since special vehicles are assumed to move at low speed (5 km/h), the axle load values include dynamic magnification. For vehicles that are expected to move at speed greater than 70 km/h, a dynamic amplification must be taken into account.
