Function analysis with integral and first derivative plot – Excel spreadsheet

This tool will plot a given function, its integral and first derivative.

How to use the tool

The usage is best illustrated with an example:

suppose you want to integrate the equation y = esin(x) – 2 from x = 0 to x = 10. The constant of integration (value of the integral at x=0) is 1. To do this using the Function Analysis tool, proceed as follows:

  1. Key in ‘=exp(sin(x))’ into cell B5. The equal to sign is required. If done correctly, cell B5 will show the value of the function at the minimum value of x;
  2. Key in the min and max values of x (0 and 10) into cells B8 and B9 respectively.
  3. Key in the constant of integration (1) into cell B11.

If done correctly, you should see this screen:

The value of the integral can be seen from the integral graph. The exact value can be obtained by placing the mouse at the last point on the graph.
